Brown
Punk - The Movie (2006) written & directed by: Tricky starring: Tricky, Brown Punk artists running time: 56:23 |
This is a film about musicians on Tricky's label Brown Punk. It's a mix of music and story. You can watch it in parts on Dailymotion (I couldn't find part 4): part 1, part 2, part 3, part 5. In this interview he describes how the idea came to be: When Tricky listens to music he has visuals in his head, Chris Blackwell suggested to make a movie, so Tricky wrote a story around the songs and lyrics from the compilation. Go here to read details about the compilation in the discography. The movie was never officially released, only on a promo DVD-R (go to the promo discography for details). |

Sophie
Sees
(2013) written & directed by: Tricky starring: Sophie Accard, Jerome Wirtz,... running time: 14:33 |
This is the first short film that Tricky directed. It was shot in Paris early 2013 and is about a woman who makes music videos in her head. That is, when she is not busy killing people. It has a lot of Tricky songs in it, some from the album "False Idols", some from EPs, one unreleased at the time and later released as a Japanese bonus track. Here's the complete list of songs and when they start during the film: 0:50 Tricky - Passion Of the Christ (from False Idols) 1:23 Tricky - Somebody's Sins (False Idols) 2:22 Francesca Belmonte - I Could (Matter Of Time EP) 5:19 'Waiting For Hours' (bonus track of Japanese 'Skilled Mechanics' album) 6:13 Tricky - Tribal Drums (False Idols) 7:40 Tricky - We Don't Die (False Idols) 8:43 'Waiting For Hours' (bonus track of Japanese 'Skilled Mechanics' album) 9:44 Tricky - We Don't Die (Tricky Remix) (False Idols Deluxe) 10:14 Tricky - Does It (False Idols) 12:55 Tricky - Nothing's Changed (False Idols) Credits for the film are: Writing & Direction: Tricky, Camera: Cedric Fontana, Tricky, Charles Deliniere, Editing: Cedric Fontana, Tricky, Production: False Idols, !K7, Cast: Sophie Accard, Jerome Wirtz, Charles Deliniere, Danielle Guillot, Juan Pierrick Dupy, Alice Troubat. 'Waiting For Hours' was released in 2016 as a bonus track on the Japanese 'Skilled Mechanics' CD. In the film it's just an instrumental part, the original song has female vocals (I don't know who it is) and a short vocal by Tricky repeated all over. |

Lonely
Guest (2022) written & directed by: Tricky starring: Quame65, Nico Bronson, Marta Zlatkowska,... running time: 13:34 |
Similar to the Brown Punk movie this is a mix of music and story. It features artists from the Lonely Guest project, the album was released in October 2021 (see the solo discography for details). The description on his official You Tube channel is: "Tricky unveils the short film ‘Lonely Guest’ - His directorial vision accompanied by tracks from the recently released album of the same name: https://falseidols.lnk.to/LonelyGuest The soundtrack which features tracks from the late Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Joe Talbot (Idles), Maximo Parks’ Paul Smith, Oh Land, Rina Mushonga, Murkage Dave, Breanna Barbara and Marta, sets the perfect backdrop for this Berlin, Neo Noir tale, written and directed by Tricky. With very little dialogue the film’s narrative is mainly driven by some strong performances and arresting visuals all beautifully and mysteriously woven together to tell the story, of Lonely Guest. Director: Tricky, Executive Producer: Marian Dorbic, Co-Producer: Boris Saposchnikow, Director Of Photography: Fabian Hülsen, Assistant Camera: Andreas Baum, Gaffer: Linus Berberich, Electrician: Lennart Merten, Hair & Make-up: Elena Schmerberg, Edit: Boris Saposchnikow, Color Grading: Bowcouleur, Mixing Engineer: Wanja Hof." Here are the songs used in the film (all can be found on the Lonely Guest album): 1. Big Bang Blues (feat. Breanna Barbara) 2. Pipe Dreams (feat. Rina Mushonga) 3. Athmosphere (feat. Lee Scratch Perry, Tricky, Marta) 4. Move Me (feat. Marta, Tricky) 5. Pay My Taxes (feat. Mukage Dave) 6. Pre War Tension (feat. Joe Talbot, Tricky, Marta) 7. Christmas Trees (feat. Paul Smith) 8. Go Now (1995) directed by: Michael Winterbottom starring: Robert Carlyle, Juliet Aubrey, James Nesbitt,... |
'Go Now' is a film about multiple sclerosis by Michael Winterbottom. Tricky has just a short scene and plays basically himself (It says in the credits: Tricky as himself). He plays with a band and Alison Goldfrapp in a club, performing 'Pumpkin'. Afterwards he's dancing with Juliet Aubrey and gets punched by Robert Carlyle. The movie also has the Tricky song 'You Don't' in it. Go here for details and video links |

Red Light Runners (2002-2004) -
unreleased director: Nick Egan starring: Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Peter O'Toole... . |
Tricky mentioned in an interview in December 2002 that he has been acting in this movie for some weeks. Unfortunately the movie had problems with financing and so it was stopped and never released (read more details in this blogpost from the writer). You can watch the trailer here and more scenes here. Tricky explained in an interview how he got involved in it: "I was in the office of this tv ad company talking to somebody and this lady come out (she knew who I was) and said 'Oh, my husband is doing a movie and I think you should be in it'". He states that at first he didn't want to do it because he had bad experiences before (in "The 5th Element"), but then the director (Nick Egan) was so nice and cool that he did it. The film was "like a heist film, with us robbing The Millennium Dome, it's a bit strange, it's a very weird movie with a lot of different characters in it together, like Peter O'Toole, Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen and Killien Murphy, so quite an odd bunch." He described his role like this: "They've got me playing this getaway driver- the guy actually wrote the character for me after hanging out with me, so it's like me playing me really, I get to smoke weed and drive around in a car being me." |
Clean (2004) directed by: Olivier Assayas starring: Maggie Cheung, Nick Nolte, Beatrice Dalle,... |
Tricky plays himself in this movie, doing a concert and then afterwards being in a bar. The soundtrack also has the song that he performed in the filim with Liz Densmore. It is called "Breakaway" (see discography here). You can watch the scene with Tricky on You Tube. Check out IMDB for details about the movie. Watch the movie on You Tube |

Girlfriends / TV / season 5 (2005) created by: Mara Brock Akil starring: Tracee Ellis Ross, Golden Brooks, Persia White,... |
Tricky has a small role in this TV series as Finn Robinson, a musician. The story is summed up quickly: he meets Lynn (one of the girlsfriends, played by Persia White) at an audition, she joins his band, they get together, he treats her like sh..., she leaves him. He appears in four episodes of season 5: 5.17: Good News, Bad News (watch it on You Tube) 5.19: Finn-ished (ep.19) (watch it on You Tube) 5.21: Wedding on the rocks (watch it on You Tube) 5.22: ...With a Twist (watch it on You Tube) A funny dialogue in 5.19: Lynn: "I love trip hop". Finn: "I hate that word." The two songs they play during these episodes were also recorded in "real life" and were released later on Persia White's album 'Mecca': "Tease" (which they practice in 5.19) and "Past Mistake" (which Lynn gives Finn as a good-bye-gift in the end of 5.22). Check out the collaborations dicscography for details. |

Ghost In The Shell (2017) - scenes
were cut directed by: Rupert Sanders starring: Scarlett Johansson, Juliette Binoche... |
Originally Tricky played a small role in this movie, but then his scenes were cut out. He can be seen in an early trailer (at 1:39). He also posted this photo from the filming. Since no one saw his scenes there is much speculation about his character. Back in 2016 there was an article online that he was supposed to play Pazu (it's not online anymore, not even in the Wayback Machine). It doesn't really make sense, because Pazu is a sort of fighter and dirty cop (as you can read here), while in the pics Tricky looks like a monk, and also IMDb lists his character as 'senior monk' (here). A Reddit discussion suggests he was supposed to be a sort of guru or advisor, as someone wrote: "...in the hardcover art book from the 2017 Ghost in the Shell, there was a page that detailed a character played by Tricky (...) who was supposed to be The Major's spiritual advisor. He was cast for the part, and the image here is a photograph of him (and others), so it seems that the scene was produced, but cut from the film." (from Reddit) [note: if you want to buy the book: compare prices! They vary from 16 to 85 €!] Other photos of Tricky's scenes be found here, here and here. So I guess we have to hop for a director's cut version or another chance that the lost scenes will surface one day... But at least Tricky contributed one song to the soundtrack: "Escape". As far as I know it is not in the movie (the album is called "inspired by..."), check it out in the solo discography. |

Sounds Of The West - Straight Outa Bristol
(1996) directed by: ??? with: Massive Attack, Tricky, Portishead... running time: 25 mins |
Tricky & DJ Milo - God's Bass Sounds Of The West is a series of documentaries about music from West England. This episode is about different bands and artists from Bristol who supposedly invented the "Bristol sound" (another episode is about Drum & Bass / Jungle, watch it here). It seems it was released on DVD with two other episodes of "Sounds Of The West" in 2008 (you can buy it here). It has interviews with the artists themselves, but also music journalist Phil Johnson, who wrote a book about the same subject with the same title (check it out here). The part from 11:24 - 16:48 is about Tricky. There is an interview in New York with a guy named Rock, who says that he's recording an album for Tricky's label Durban Poison with DJ Storm. He says that Ambersunshower will have an appearance and also Tricky. Unfortunately this was never released, as far as I know. He also talks about the project Drunkenstein, which consisted of American and British rappers (Rock, Tricky, MC Mello and Rodney P from London Posse, Storm and Papa D, according to discogs). Also this was never released. The only thing that turned up from these New York recording sessions was the Grassroots EP (check it out in the discography). Drunkenstein are credited for additional vocals on the track "Grassroots" and "Tricky Kid" (only on the version on the Grassroots EP). During the interview they also play the track "God's Bass", a song by Tricky and DJ Milo, which was only released on a promo vinyl (check out the discography here) in 1997 or 1998. Naked And Famous (7.12.1997)
directed by: Mark Kidel with: Tricky,... running time: 49 mins |
These tracks by Tricky and Nearly God are played: Tattoo, Yoga, Antihistamine, Tricky Kid, Poems, I be the prophet, Strugglin', Hell Is Round The Corner, Strugglin', Poems, Pumpkin, Makes Me Wanna Die, Abbaon Fat Tracks, Baby Namboos: Late Night Antics, Keep Your Mouth Shut, Ponderosa, Christiansands (live Shepherds Bush), Lyrics Of Fury (live Shepherds Bush), Hell Is Round The Corner, Bad Things, Vent (live Shepherds Bush), Bad Dreams (live Shepherds Bush) This is a brilliant and very authentic documentary about Tricky! It has interview parts, excerpts from his videos, sometimes it just watches him, for example visiting his family and friends in Bristol and also going back to his old school. You can watch a clip and read about it on Mark Kidel's website here. It was shown on UK TV a few times (it was filmed for Channel 4 Arthouse), followed by a broadcast of a live show, later it was released on the DVD of "A Ruff Guide" (see discography) but without the concert part. The concert was at Shepherd's Bush London on April 16, 1997 (see details here). Parts of this concert are also cut into the documentary. Confusingly around parts before a concert in Paris (April 23, Elysee Montmartre), so you could think it's the Paris concert. The chapter on the DVD menue of "A Ruff Guide" is also called 'Live in Paris', but it definitely is the London concert. The concert can be found on You Tube, as well. You can watch an interview with Mark Kidel about this and other films here. A funny details for example that he reveils is that Mark contacted Yamaha to give some QY20 to Tricky's school (in the documentary you see Tricky teaching students to make music on the QY20). Girls, Tricky (2001)
directed by: Steve McQueen with: Tricky running time: 15 mins |
Tricky - Girls (studio rehearsal) This is a short film or video performance piece by Steve McQueen that was shown at various exhibitions (see details at the Blowback mini site). You can see Tricky in the studio rehearsing "Girls" from "Blowback". The whole film is 14 minutes long, unfortunately it is not online anyshere. But you can watch a short part of it on You Tube, when it was exhibitioned in Paris in 2011. The idea came from a long video interview that Steve McQueen did with Tricky for showroom.com in 2001. Also that interview is not online anymore, but you can read the transcript here. Here are details about the film on IMDB. Watch a part of it on You Tube |

Vulnerable movie (2003)
directed by: Bas Vink with: Tricky running time: 15 mins |
These tracks are played (all from Vulnerable, of course): Moody, Ice Pick, Moody, Search Search Survive, Ice Pick, How High, Search Search Survive, The Love Cats, Antimatter (Jimmy & T. Remix), Hollow, Dear God, Car Crash, Snap Them (feat. Radanna), What Is Wrong, Where I'm From, Receive Us (feat. Radagon), Snap Them (feat. Radanna), Stay. This is a short promo video or documentary that was used for Tricky's album "Vulnerable". It is released on the DVD of the CD & DVD version of 'Vulnerable' and also on the US version of the enhanced CD (see discography). The video mixes interview parts (Tricky and Costanza) with scenes shot in L.A., where Tricky lived at that time, and parts of music videos ('Unofficial', 'Antimatter - Jimmy & T. Remix', 'Receive Us', 'Snap Them'). According to IMDb this documentary is 24 minutes long, but I guess that's a mistake. They probably mean the whole DVD (it has some other videos on it, too), because the whole concept of the DVD was by Bas Vink (as you can read on discogs). Bas Vink also directed a video for the song 'Unofficial', check out the videography for details, some of the scenes of that video are also in the Vulnerable movie. I guess he also directed the videos for 'Antimatter - Jimmy & T. Remix', 'Receive Us' and 'Snap Them', because big parts of these videos are included in this movie and are released on the different Vulnerable CD versions. Watch it on You Tube |

the movie was just so bad). |

Good Cop / TV miniseries / theme song
(2012) directed by: Sam Miller starring: Michael Angelis, Warren Brown, Don Gayle , ... |
Tricky - Armies This song is not released anywhere. There is no soundtrack for this miniseries, so this song is unreleased so far. It was chosen as the theme song for the TV series "Good Cop" (see the opening on Vimeo or You Tube). You can read here why they've chosen this particular song: "The music has a cool, urban and modern feel. The lyrics are poetic, open to different and personal interpretation. But for us, they talked about the pain and pleasure of owning a gun and the terrifying immediacy of killing someone. The song doesn't glorify violence. It is emotional but with a very contemporary feel." You can listen to the song on Spotify or on You Tube. The vocals are by Francesca Belmonte, if I'm not mistaken. Tricky mentions it in an interview with The Independent in April 2012 as the first single of his new album, but it was never released (he also says that it will be a double album, which it wasn't). Spotify lists it as a bonus track of the album "False Idols", but it wasn't on any version of it. |

Featuring "Evolution Revolution Love" by Tricky. ++ Music by Teho Teardo featuring The Balanescu Quartet."
